Crystal structure and functional groups of distilled Vetiver root (Vetiveria zizanoides) soda pulp

Pulping is the most common process to produce fibers from lignocellulosic materials. One of lignocellulosic materials that available from essential oil industry in Indonesia is distilled vetiver root. The soda process is the chosen chemical pulping method of non-wood materials, because it is considered to be economically viable on a small scale. Pulp fibers are potential to be utilized as reinforcing agent in composite products. The strength of pulp fibers is affected by its crystalline structure. Furthermore, the effectiveness of soda pulping to separate lignin from pulp fibers can be revealed by the functional groups in soda pulp. The aim of this research is to characterize the crystal structure and to analyze the functional groups of distilled vetiver root soda pulp.
