Jakarta has undergone massive urbanization that caused kampung to become an enclave within urban concrete jungles. Kampung Paseban is one of Jakarta’s oldest kampung that has experienced massive spatial urban development since the 60's. Kampung Paseban which previously known as one of inner-city kampung and native Betawi settlement has been gradually inhabited by migrants from various regions. The objective of this study is to show how urban processes create gentrification in kampung, focusing on the rise of kost exclusive (exclusive boarding houses) and its consequence on social changes that create sociocultural diversity within Kampung Paseban. The analysis uses a qualitative approach that emphasizes the interpretation of the spatial and social changes in Kampung Paseban, Central Jakarta. The method consists of the study of Jakarta historical literature, spatial and social mapping, in-depth interviews, and field observations. This study shows that Kampung Paseban has experienced demographic and cultural transition during the process of gentrification. Many Betawi who had lived in Paseban moved out and dispersed over the southern part of Jakarta suburbs such as Cilandak, Cijantung and Depok. The Betawi environment has now diminished and has been replaced by the emergence of kost exclusive which has become ubiquitous since 2000’s. More than 50 of vertical kost exclusive and an apartment with minimalist and modern architecture which conform urban middleclass taste have created a completely new urban scene within kampung. This study shows how kampung cope with urban situation; creating a mixed neighborhood with a new social environment, which demonstrates urbanism within kampung with the loss of Betawi identity and solidarity. Keywords: gentrification, kampung, kost exclusive, Jakarta, Paseban, sociocultural diversity
