Lignin and Its Composites

Lignin as a novel biomaterial has functional properties for the development of new biocomposite materials, and it would be an appropriate candidate for modification and chemical reactions. This chapter deals with the capability of lignin for reinforcing other materials in polymer biocomposites, especially incorporation of lignin in thermoplastic and thermoset composites. Lignin can be composited with thermoplastic polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene and polylactic acid) and also thermoset materials (polyurethane and epoxy). The addition of lignin to non-biodegradable materials improved the biodegradability of resulted composites. The degradation of resulted composites related to the existence of lignin which can be seen through the hydrophilic functional groups of lignin. This encourage the biodegradation of the obtained composites.
