An increase in pCO2 in surface ocean waters causes an increase in bicarbonate ions (HCO3−) and protons (H+) and a decrease in carbonate ions (CO32−). The phenomenon can cause decreasing the pH and the saturation state of the seawater with respect to CO32−. The phenomenon known as ocean acidification (OA). Ocean acidification has negative impacts on marine calcifying organisms. Seaweeds as a primary producer in ocean ecosystem are effected by ocean acidification. It was effect on the physiological seaweed, among others calcification, respiration, photosynthesis, and seaweed community. Calcareous seaweed is most influenced by ocean acidification, because the process of calcification directly related to the availability of CaCO3- in the ocean. Calcareous seaweeds are more sensitive than non-calcareous seaweeds to alter their performance under scenarios of reduced pH.
